There are four varieties within the Birchen "Family"; Birchen, Brown Red, Lemon Blue, & Silver Blue. Of the four, only Silver Blue is not an accepted variety for Bantam Cochins.
The Silver Blue is bred exactly like a Black Birchen. The markings and size requirements are the same. The difference comes in the body color. Silver Blue is a Birchen bird (E^R/E^R) on an Andalusian Blue Base (BBS). Silver Blues should be bred to birchen. This crossing produces 50% Birchen and 50% Silver Blue. While Silver Blue can be bred to Silver Blue, because of the BBS genetics, a % of Silver Splash will result. These birds are nearly indistinguishable from regular Splash. Breeders need to be very careful when producing Silver Splash. Mistakenly adding a Silver Splash into a BBS program can cause serious color leakage issues in the BBS birds. I do not recommend breeding Silver Blue to Silver Blue for this reason.
We have been breeding and showing Silver Blue since 2019. Currently, there is no consolidated effort to get Silver Blue recognized by the APA or the ABA. Several people around the country are working on increasing their numbers. Below are some of our Silver Blue Cochins.
